Rugged colonial romance be damned: this is Cape Town at its most cosmopolitan and sophisticated, a spot of old-world Europe in the south. With Table Mountain behind and the Atlantic in front, Cape Royale couldn’t be in a much more scenic position. And behind that classic, somewhat Parisian-looking facade is a home-grown contemporary luxury boutique hotel of the highest caliber, eighty-two suites (no mere rooms) with wide-ranging views of the Cape.

The interior style is somewhere between classic upper-crust fantasy and modernist Zen-inspired luxury, from the marble-clad, columned lobby to the clean-lined and contemporary suites, where Mies Barcelona chairs share space with crystal chandeliers and full-size kitchens with granite-topped counters. It’s an accessible sort of high-end look, more like a well-turned-out private apartment than a design hotel or a five-star presidential suite. Except for the presidential suite itself, of course.

Business facilities, bars, restaurants, and the obligatory spa and wellness center — all the modern must-haves are present and accounted for. The rooftop pool deck is placed for stunning, sweeping views, and the waterfront, with its wealth of bars, restaurants and shops, is just minutes away.
