The French countryside is home to more than a few gastronomic inns, operated by the partnership of a highly regarded chef and his virtuoso decorator wife—hotels where the cuisine and the hospitality are equal attractions, and the hotel, however remote, becomes a destination unto itself.

Before boarding a flight for Paris and preparing to rent a Peugot for the long drive to some secluded French farmhouse, Americans (and particularly Northeasterners) would do well to consider that a fine example of this genre of hotel happens to exist practically on New York City’s doorstep, in the form of Thomas and Theresa Henkelmann’s Homestead Inn.

It’s not out of some reactionary anti-Gallic fervor that we recommend this place; quite to the contrary, as the cuisine at the Homestead Inn is classical French, and almost bewilderingly authentic. Rather, it’s because this is simply an extraordinary hotel—the interiors blend American Colonial and traditional European elements with the daring and whimsy of a skilled modern decorator, adding muted contemporary colors and antiques from as far afield as China and Bali. And the setting is beyond reproach; a 1799 Victorian manor house set on several acres of sprawling lawn, alongside the waters of Long Island Sound. Rooms are sumptuous, some with antique sleigh beds, others with modern designer pieces, and all featuring the essential Frette linens and Darphin bath products.

Thomas Henkelmann, the dining room, is just as striking an environment, from the antique silver to the fine china—but the story here is Thomas Henkelmann’s award-winning cuisine, bringing traditional French principles to bear on the finest American ingredients. Perhaps best of all, you’re less than an hour by car from Manhattan. The French have Euro-Disney, and we have the Homestead Inn. It hardly seems fair.

How to get there:

Homestead Inn-Thomas Henkelmann is approximately a 35 minute drive from LaGuardia Airport or 10 minutes from White Plains/Westchester Airport.
