Where else in Shanghai but the French Concession would you expect to find a boutique hotel like this one? The Pudi Boutique Hotel at Fuxing Parc Shanghai is subtly, discreetly French, right down to the “c” in “Parc” — French-designed, decked out in French-made furnishings, and managed by the French hospitality giant Accor.

We can confidently predict you’ll be seeing a lot more of this sort of thing in coming years, as Shanghai becomes a bona fide business capital. While some of the city’s hotels bowl you over with relentless Chinese kitsch, the Pudi opts for a mod-China look — it’s cosmopolitan meets traditional, less a piece of theatre and more suited to an authentically modern Shanghai.

In fact it’s this slightly relaxed approach that is the Pudi’s greatest strength. Luxuries are more than suitable but never over-the-top, and the public spaces are stylish but not intimidating. There’s a French restaurant and a champagne bar called Belle Epoque, expressions of the hotel’s European roots. And the service is slightly European as well, though not in a bad way — here the help is highly professional, always available, but thankfully a bit less intense than the Asian five-star norm.
