Increasingly the action in Bali is moving ever farther from the beach, to idyllic inland enclaves like the artists’ colony of Ubud and the lush, unspoiled countryside that surrounds it. In this environment of rice paddies, lush tropical forests and spectacular valley views lies Puri Wulandari, the latest luxury villa retreat to open in the pristine seclusion of the Ayung River highlands.

Comprising some thirty-four thatched-roof villas, Puri Wulandari is long on privacy and correspondingly short on the trappings of the traditional hotel. Twenty-four hour butler service means you’re never truly on your own, but if it’s alone time you’re after, it’s easy enough to disappear into your own world. Each villa comes with a 29-inch flat-screen television and DVD player, a vast soaking tub, and an outdoor sitting area. And even if you’re in the mood for a swim, there’s no need to socialize — each villa has a private plunge pool and a traditional bale beside it, perfect for some shade or a room service dinner.

A full-service spa is almost obligatory in a Balinese hotel and Puri Wulandari doesn’t disappoint — the Lila Ulangun spa offers traditional Indonesian health and beauty treatments in an open-air pavilion surrounded by the quiet sounds of the forest.

The poolside terrace restaurant serves breakfast and a Mediterranean-Italian cuisine for lunch, while the Janger restaurant is the dinner venue, offering sweeping views of the mountains and the Ayung valley. Afternoon tea or cocktails are taken in the Barong Bar, possibly the best place to be, drink in hand, as the sun begins to set.
